Peter M's Staff Picks

This is an album I put together over the course of several years. I consider it to be respresentative of the beginning of my "spiritual awakening" (for lack of a better term). I put alot of myself into this, a lot of pain and growth and healing. I suppose if you had to classify it, it could be described as ambient experimental noise/drone. It focuses on creating a melodic journey and soundscape, culling up thoughts and emotions from the unconscious mind. Some of it can be very relaxing, some of it can be noisy and weird, but overall I wanted to create something that lends to a meditative state. It is heavily inspired by my favorite band, Animal Collective, as well as my exploration of  many branches mysticism and spirituality, as well as my work with meditation and shamanism. I hope you get somethign out of it. "Moose Indian" were the last words of Hnery David Thoreau, however I have since change my name to Flower Giant Tree Deer as I feel it is more appropriate for me as I am shedding my old form - so this is a rare item now haha.

Incredible -- one of the most enigmatic books I've ever read and one of the most compelling. A thoroughly unique, symbolism-heavy, mystifying page-turner. I've never read anything quite like it, absolutely brilliant.  A clever, profound and interesting view on the world, on people and progress, on society and on different ways to interact with it. Every man is a tiny snail crawling between these worlds while progress, chaos, fears and absurdity are at work trying to destroy him.

Beautiful ad fascinating. All is connected. The four liberal arts of the Quadrivium complemented the Trivium to make for seven liberal arts of a free person in the ancient world. The parts of the Trivium were Grammar, Logic, and Rhetoric. The parts of the Quadrivium were ordered as the study of quantity (arithmetic), the study of spatial patterns (geometry), The study of patterns in time (music), the study of patterns in time and space (astronomy).

The Verso Book of Dissent: Revolutionary Words from Three Millennia of Rebellion and Resistance Cover Image

$16.95
ISBN: 9781788739115
Availability: On Our Shelves Now
Published: Verso - June 16th, 2020

This tome is not an analysis or action plan for dissent, but rather a collection of quotations from the various moments in time requiring it. It is more like a reference book or a bathroom reader (I say this not to criticize but only so you know what to expect.) Each entry is short, 2 pages at most (more typically, an entry is a sentence or two) with a short bio. The entries are organized chronologically from 1800 BCE to 2013, spanning a global perspective of rebelion and change. The collection includes extracts from books and speeches, but also song lyrics, poetry and even graffiti slogans.

In a world where the disabled voice is often viewed through the lens of what disability rights activist Stella Young coined as "inspiration porn" or with the rah-rah sympathies of the latest Lifetime Channel movie, a book like Disability Visibility is an act of revolutionary love and claiming of space. The essays in cover the experiences, lives, rages, desires, logic, and inherent personhood of the varied contributors, all of whose lives include the fact of their disabilities. Open your eyes to the lives of those around you that so many would chose to ignore, we are all human, we are all the same.

Probably one of the most influential things I have ever read. Alejandro Jodorowsky is a personal hero of mine. Brace yourself for weirdness, brace yourself for truth, brace yourself for lies, brace yourself for healing. A fascinating look at one of the most passionate, strange, enigmatic, and loving hman beings to have graced this earth, this delves into his own brand of therapy, he calls "psychomagic", which is an amalgam of psychotherapy, shamanism, magic, psychology, and art. Revolutionary.

Proves the adage that good things can come in small packages. In this short book, not a wasted word, Junger combines memoir, journalism and scholarly writing to give us a book that makes one think about where our society has been and where it is heading. Tackles the tough subjects of the rising rate of mental illness and PTSD that many in our society are experiencing. Starting at the beginning with the Native Americans and their society that celebrated communal living, warning us of the selfishness and lack of connection that our way of living has fostered and the results that many continue to live with. Informative and thought provoking. Please pick this up.
