Anne Garreta, one of the younger members of the Oulipo, a long-running group of (mostly French) writers and mathematicians known for producing works written (or, in some cases, theoretically generated) under various invented constraints, begins this novel with a maxim: "not one day without a woman." What follows is a gorgeous and surgically precise series of vignettes, each written (or so Garreta plans), over the course of one day, wherein Garreta details and analyzes the memories -- or, in some cases, the memories that have displaced her memories -- of women she has desired or who have desired her, each of whom is designated by an initial. The resulting novel, which Garreta early on describes as a "stammering alphabet of desire" (she's too modest: her "stammering" produces stunning prose), marks something of a concession from a writer otherwise given to unsettling literary norms to the vogue for confessional writing or "autofiction," which the book in its many digressions and modulations of perspective constitutes both an object and an incisive critique of. I finished this book in about a day and immediately reread it: it's that good.

Not One Day begins with a maxim: "Not one day without a woman." What follows is an intimate, erotic, and sometimes bitter recounting of loves and lovers past, breathtakingly written, exploring the interplay between memory, fantasy, and desire.

"For life is too short to submit to reading poorly written books and sleeping with women one does not love."

Anne Garr ta, author of the groundbreaking novel Sphinx (Deep Vellum, 2015), is a member of the renowned Oulipo literary group. Not One Day won the Prix M dicis in 2002, recognizing Garr ta as an author "whose fame does not yet match their talent."
