David Vann explores father/son relationships with a focus on his own father's suicide in this collection of stories, which are not quite memoir and not wholly fiction.   The result is contradictory, visceral, emotional and a little ugly -- much like the act itself.  One of the best books I have read this year. "A father is a lot for a thing to be."

An alternate history of America in 1962 with US occupation divided between Nazi Germany and post-WWII Japan. Also: there are alternate universes. Any attempt to describe this book without reading it won't do it justice, especially not when you learn that Philip K. Dick actually used the I-Ching (and probably amphetamines) to determine his plot.

High school is a time of insecurity for most people, but thankfully a lot of this book is about acceptance: accepting that boys and girls can be just friends, accepting that true love is not always romantic, accepting that you don't always have to find lost things. A quirky, original throwback of a book that brings to mind the world of John Waters' "Hairspray." I loved it.

Listen, whatever it is you try
to do with your life, nothing will ever dazzle you
like the dreams of your body,

its spirit
longing to fly while the dead-weight bones

toss their dark mane and hurry
back into the fields of glittering fire

where everything,
even the great whale,
throbs with song.

What else is there to say about Jane Eyre? If you like headstrong heroines, tormented heroes, or romance with complications, then this is the book for you.

Less bizarre and more sentimental than some of his other books. It's also a little bit slighter, but nevertheless, one of my favorite Murakami novels.
