Bear has a secret he keeps from readers, but he goes around blabbing it, telling it, and blurting it to all of his animal friends. His secret has something to do with the set of cards and gift-wrapped box he's hiding behind his back. This would be a fun book to share with preschoolers on their birthday because the cub is the center of attention and, at the end of the story, the cards are revealed to spell out "Happy Birthday" and the box to be holding a cake. The cards the animals hold up give youngsters the opportunity to learn letters and colors, and the candles on the cake can be used for counting practice. The story is told in short rhyming sentences of large, colorful, hand-lettered text. The ink and acrylic paint illustrations depict cheerfully clothed animals with expressive faces.

This relaxed and rhyming recitation of rules can make library orientations for young patrons less daunting and more fun. Fifteen points of etiquette, applicable to any kind of library, are introduced and then demonstrated by anthropomorphized animals, rendered in acrylic paint and ink. This should definitely help little ones remember to “Read it, don’t eat it. / No dog-ears, please. / Find someplace else to sneeze. / Borrow, don’t steal. / TRY not to squeal. / Rips and tears won’t magically heal.” But the story is not all about “don’ts.” Everyone is enthusiastically encouraged to enjoy books and to “share with a friend / a sister, a brother.” The page backgrounds alternate between solid bold colors and bright open white space, which will show well when held up in front of a large group.

Rushmore Boulevard is the busiest street in town—until Agatha May Walker decides to do something about it. Armed with a batch of Sweet and Spicy ginger snaps, a wingback chair, a card table, and a Parcheesi set, Agatha and her best friend, Eulalie Scruggs, take to the street to reclaim it from the noisy cars, motorcycles, and giant trucks that rumble by all day long.

Can these lifelong friends convince their neighbors to stop and smell the honeysuckle, listen to the mariachi band, and best of all, sample the Sweet and Spicy ginger snaps?

In this charming picture book about slowing down, a laid-back attitude is the best kind. So sit for a spell and give it a whirl!
